Detroit Electric SP:01 production model breaks cover

SP:01 will be fastest production electric sports car in the world

Detroit Electric has revealed the final design of the all-new, pure electric two-seater sports cars, the SP:01.

The limited edition SP:01 will be the fastest production electric sports car in the world when it goes on sale next year.

It was first showcased as a prototype at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show and has been refined to improve aerodynamic performance before production starts in the UK later this year.

Detroit Electric

Albert Lam, former Group CEO of Lotus Engineering Group and Executive Director of Lotus Cars of England, revived Detroit Electric in 2008 aiming to develop an EV with “innovative technology and superior handling and performance.”

Head of Design at Detroit Electric, Jerry Chung, said;

“The final design of SP:01 incorporates signature Detroit Electric design DNA, carried over from the prototype model we revealed last year.

Coupled with many motorsport visual cues, the new fastback design, bold face and sharp contours evoke the company’s vision of pure electric performance.”

SP:01 performance

The changes made will reduce lift and improve downforce at higher speeds. To accompany the aerodynamic enhancements, a number of aesthetic and functional changes have been made to the SP:01’s exterior body.

Its high-power electric motor will reach a top speed of 155mph and sprint to 60mph in just 3.7 seconds; these performance figures will set new standards for the Electric Vehicle segment.
